A dilapidated room in Budapest, home to a single woman who is to be evicted – this is the starting point for Kornél Mundruczó’s impressive stage production «Imitation of Life» about poverty and social imbalances in Hungary. Based on a newspaper story about the murder of a Roma, the award-winning Hungarian film and theatre director and his Hungarian company Proton Theatre have created a story about people living on the edge of society. In his productions that capture the sheer banality of everyday life, it is not always easy to tell evil from good and it is often found where you expect it least. For instance, in a squalid apartment where twists of fate are intertwined to create a complex and visually stunning play. The universe starts to unravel – the stage rotates relentlessly around its own axis and leaves a trail of misery and devastation in its wake. A disturbingly powerful image of a society that has lost all sense of orientation. Kornél Mundruczó’s theatre and film language is distinguished by uncompromising images of a violent society. In contrast, his internationally acclaimed work «Imitation of Life» is an unusually poetic piece of theatre that strikes a chord with the audience through its beauty.
