“Sound of Music” is a megalomaniacal musical that deals with unemployment, depression, global warming, plane crashes and animals in risk of extinction. Broadway singers, dancers, golden curtains, sequins, glitz and glamour – while the world around us is stumbling from one crisis to the next, we are dazzled by stunning beauty on stage. Musicals were hugely popular during the Great Depression of the 1930s, as they provided a way of escape from the despondency of everyday life. Paying tribute to the musicals of that era, Yan Duyvendak has developed a show so spectacular it’s like sitting on a volcano.
