The 74-year-old Senegalese choreographer Germaine Acogny delves into her family history and uses a monumental solo performance to explore the colonial history of Africa and Europe. In «Somewhere at the Beginning», we encounter her grandmother Aloopho, who, as an animistic priestess, enjoyed a powerful position in the village, and hear the memories of Acogny’s father, an official in the French colonial administration in Dakar. As with West-African Griots, who perpetuate wisdom and knowledge through dance and oral tradition, Acogny approaches the past and searches for her own identity. The director Mikaël Serre presents a poetic and intimate portrait of the icon of contemporary African dance – through intensive video images which literally shift between the veils of history.
