“The blind poet” is dedicated to the Syrian poet Abu l-’Ala al-Ma’arri (973–1057), whose deeply sceptical view of dogmatism and fanaticism takes us back in time to a period roughly 1000 years ago: Córdoba is the world’s financial and cultural capital, women hold positions of power, Paris is just a small provincial town and Charlemagne is a powerful, yet illiterate leader. Jan Lauwers and the Needcompany travel back to this period of history to ponder the notion of identity in today’s multicultural Europe.
