Nightwalks with Teenagers

Mammalian Diving Reflex | Canada

What would the world look like if it were ruled by teenagers? Where would they take us on their walks through the city after dark? The Canadian theatre company Mammalian Diving Reflex encourages teens from Birsfelden to take ownership of their neighbourhood. During the performative journey, young people guide spectators through dark woods, dance with them over meadows on the outskirts of town and stray from the beaten track. Driven by an unquenchable thirst for adventure, they challenge the audience to see the world through their eyes. Everything looks different in the deep of the night: Suddenly we’re not just crossing urban geographical boundaries, but immersing ourselves in a world of different thoughts and emotions.

«Here, however, we are in their hands. And those hands prove surprisingly gentle: they hug us, coax us to reconnect with our childhood selves on the monkey bars; they introduce us to the estate’s resident duck; they perform an absurdly funny play in which they seem to be trying on adult personas for size.»
