Ivanov

by Anton Chekhov

Amir Reza Koohestani & Mehr Theatre Group | Iran

Ivanov is exhausted. His wife Anna, who defied her Jewish family five years ago out of love for him, is dying, but he no longer loves her. He is no longer interested in his former projects and plans. With large headphones covering his ears Ivanov withdraws from the world and listens to English language courses just in case he ever wishes to emigrate.

With his excellent ensemble of actors and almost cinematic images, Koohestani accomplishes a powerful atmospherically intense translation of the classic play as a story of our age. In 2009, the Iranian youth started a series of protests following the presidential election. What happened to the ‘Green Wave’? After the celebrated premiere in Teheran, a young Iranian actress posted on her Facebook profile: “We are all Ivanov.”
