Ganesh Versus the Third Reich

Bruce Gladwin & Back to Back Theatre | Australia

The elephant-headed god Ganesh travels through Nazi Germany to reclaim the Swastika, an ancient Hindu symbol that is being used and abused by Hitler. As this intrepid hero embarks on his journey of awesome images a second narrative is revealed: a young man wishes to create a play about Ganesha, the god of overcoming obstacles. This bizarre story is the brainchild of the Australian theatre group “Back to Back Theatre”, which works with people who are perceived to have a disability; the very people who presumably would not have survived the Nazi regime in Germany. “Ganesh Versus the Third Reich” is a poignant, beautiful, disarming work, full of vulnerability and sly transparency. It is the making of a holocaust fairytale and a panopticon of emotive questions about power.

“A remarkable production that never lets you settle into passive acceptance of anything it does. It’s a vital, senses-sharpening tonic for theatregoers who feel they’ve seen it all.”
Ben Brantley, The New York Times, 10. Januar 2013
